The Walk Through

Day 90 of the build:

The fully loaded cement truck was stuck in the mud. We had a lot of heavy rain over the weekend. The driver had decided to take an ill advised short cut across the 'back yard' and ran into the newly covered trench for the sewer line and submerged its front right tire completely in the muck. A number of company pickup trucks were parked as their experts came by to offer advice on what to do.

Last Friday the three of us arrived at the house for the final inspection. The Project Manager said that the 'demonstration' would take about 2 hours to complete, and started by turning on each appliance in the kitchen showing us that they worked and advising us how to maintain them. He told us about the floors, cabinets and counter tops, demonstrated the faucet and checked for leaks, and pointed out the significance of GFCI outlets.

From there we went to each room of the house to check for fit and function, opening each window and inspecting each wall for defects. Then he took us outside to view the roof, siding and other exterior features of the house. At the end of the day we had a list of maybe a dozen, very low priority items. Considering the complexity of building a house and the potential for error with each system I considered this an extremely impressive positive review.

As we were inspecting the hall bath, the doorbell rang. The representative from the stair lift company had come to measure our stairs. Due to the high ceilings, the lift will have to be special ordered, and will probably be installed just before Thanksgiving. A disappointment since I was hoping to have it in next week, but not much else could be done.

I was invited back today to find that the list had been completed except for the replacement of a defective kitchen cabinet which had to be ordered from the factory. He expects that to be installed within the next 5 days or so.

I am really ready to move in.

They got the truck out, but it was a great show for about an hour.
