As I arrived at the site and saw the excavating machinery I assumed they were digging the hole for a new neighbor. I was wrong. They were actually fine tuning the final grade of my lot, ensuring that the elevations matched the plot plan we were given when we signed the contract for the house. As the equipment moved large rocks and gravel to holding area across the street, measurements were made with a sight level to insure the right height had been achieved. Then the mountain of topsoil in our back yard started to disappear. When they were done we had about 8 inches of soil over a very rocky base. *Note: Don't plan to dig planting holes more then 8 inches deep.
